About Me

I’m David Thomas Graves.

I’ve spent most of my working life around labor. I started as a blue collar worker and later represented workers in elected union office, participated in labor negotiations, advocated for working people in Washington DC, and worked with companies on workforce and human capital issues.

Later in my career, I became a data analyst specializing in labor issues. That gave me another way to look at the same problems not just through experience, but through the numbers.

I’ve had the opportunity to see work from more than one side of the table. And one thing has become very clear to me: workers cannot protect their value in an economy they don’t understand.

That’s why I created Beyond the Workforce. I want to cut through the hype, look at the numbers, and explain what changes in technology, labor, and the economy actually mean for working people.

The Machine Didn’t Make the Bargain is my first book.

I didn’t write it because I wanted to become an author. I wrote it because I couldn’t find the book I thought workers needed.
